It can be difficult to spot a termite infestation, because termites leave few outward signs when they set up in a piece of wood, and by the time the damage becomes noticeable, the termites have been present for at least a few years. Still, it’s better to detect an infestation late, than never. Here are five signs that your home may have serious termite problems.
Buckling wood, swollen floors/ceilings
Severe termite damage sometimes looks like water damage, so if you notice this type of damage in the home, and you cannot trace it to a leak or burst pipe, odds are that you have a termite infestation. However, even if there is an obvious source of excess moisture, termites may still be present, since certain species prefer wood that is higher in humidity.
The scent of mold
If the smell of mold or mildew is persistent in your home and you are unable to get rid of it or find its source, you might have a termite problem. This smell is due to the termites themselves and their activities, because they like to raise the moisture levels of their working areas.
Cracked furniture
Drywood termites can infest your walls and floors, as well as any wood furniture you have. When this species sets up inside furniture and it causes extensive damage, the furniture may start to crack. Drywood termite infestations can spread throughout the home, and when this happens, your home will need to be fumigated in order to completely remove all the colonies in the building.
Termite swarms
Termites swarm when they are on the lookout for new nesting locations. When a termite colony reaches maturity, it will start to spawn winged, reproductive termites known as swarmers, which will leave the colony and fly around the area. If the colony is in the home, the swarm will spawn indoors and you will start to see insects that resemble flying ants. You may also spot piles of wings indoors after a swarm.
Mud tunnels
Subterranean termites create mud tubes from the ground to link their nest to food sources. Although they are not always indicative of an infestation, these small, pencil-sized tubes can be a sign that there is one. There are many types of mud tunnels termites can build. If you see any, it is a good idea to have an inspection done on your home.
